Glass is mainly composed of very pure silica sand that any desired color with the addition of common or rare metal oxides. This compound, with small amounts of other chemical substances, is fused at very high temperatures then turning into colored glass. A different oxide that, proportionally to the amount used, determines its intensity characterizes each color.

Colors have always been made in Murano; therefore it is easy to state that the world has learnt from this island how to use colored glass, grasping since the antiquity the secrets of Venetian factories. At the time of the Serenissima Republic, those who betrayed such secrets were harshly punished, sometimes even with death.
